I'll admit that my motives for holding this giveaway are not entirely altruistic. Whenever I teach workshops, people inevitably ask me where I buy my supplies. While I buy what I can in local shops here in New York (I love Daytona Trimming) there are some things that I can only seem to find online, and that people that don't live in New York will definitely find themselves ordering online. Joann carries a lot of things, but is essentially an online big box store. So- in the spirit of Tradeschool, please tell me your favorite online sources for embroidery supplies. I'm feeling generous, so feel free to leave separate comments for separate sources, and you'll up your odds! ****Please be sure to include a URL*******Two winners will be drawn this Thursday afternoon (3/28), before the next and final live Tradeschool class at the Museum of Art and Design (sorry New Yorkers, it's sold out already....) Good Luck! I can't wait to hear about your resources, and when I've compiled them all, I'll be sure to add a new section to the blog for all to use.
*Kit will contain: Summer Lines Sampler, Backing Fabric, Perle Cotton, Embroidery Floss, and an Embroidery Needle, as well as a Rebecca Ringquist Postcard. Good Luck!
I live in Boston and can get many supplies here, but perle cotton in a variety of colors is getting harder and harder to find. I am particularly fond of the Valdani variegateds -- which have all but disappeared in Brick and mortar stores especially in the jewel tones which I favor -- Purl Soho has a good selection as do a few other places.
ReplyDeleteI buy my Sulky transfer pens from Amazon.
ReplyDeleteI like buying 'deals' for neighborhood crafting boutiques. Last night I got a Groupon for a $50 certificate to spend at Annie & Company (an upscale knitting and needlepoint store) in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, for $25 or a 50% savings. Similar deals come up about once a month in Manhattan and it is a good way to support your local stores! Check the 'deals' in your own neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteHonestly I like Ebay and etsy. I find such good lots of embroidery things!

I love Etsy for wonderful patterns and kits. Flickr also has a huge range of vintage transfers and patterns that people have scanned in. Here's one good set with several hundred designs:

And Urban Threads has some cool patterns, too:

For thread and such, though, I honestly tend to stick to big box stores. Purl Soho sells DMC floss for $1.25/skein vs. Joann's or A.C. Moore for $0.35/skein. I know Purl Soho is a smaller business and probably has a higher overhead, but my budget doesn't have a lot of wiggle room these days, and that's a lot of mark-up.
I always search around on eBay and Etsy if I can't find what I want/need locally. I'm a Valdani fan and it is nearly impossible to find in my area. I like purchasing from Bunny Hill Designs...pretty website too!

ReplyDeleteand crabapplehill.com and bunnyhilldesigns.com and http://rosylittlethings.com/ and http://www.welovefrenchknots.com/ constantly features embroidery artists who sell their designs and one more I like is http://www.woolandhoop.com/
I've become an Amazon Prime fanatic. Started with them for shipping supplies and it's grown into my favorite online source.
ReplyDeleteYou can find a silicone thimble right here and there are several colors!

I have found wonderful variegated embroidery floss online at http://www.crabapplehillstudio.com/default.aspx. Crabapple Hill Studio carries other fantastic embroidery supplies.
ReplyDeleteWith all my online shopping I always go first to Etsy and I usually have good luck.
ReplyDeleteI love the floss from Anna Maria Horner's line with Anchor. You can buy it from her website:

I usually buy frames from JoAnn's:

I'm fond of rosielittlethings.com as someone mentioned above, but other go-to's of mine are Lorna Bateman Embroidery for floss and pincushion supplies; Silent Stitches for floss, linen, scissors, and Hardwick hoops; and ABC Stitch Therapy for floss and linen

Hi Rebecca. I've purchased DMC pearl cotton from Knitting Warehouse (in addition to yarn, they sell embroidery floss).

Their price on size 8 thread is $2.19.
Amazon. I find all of those things on amazon, and their shipping is very fast!
ReplyDeleteI buy a lot of thread at Purl and also a great local place is Gather Here in Cambridge. I get most of my hoops at thrift stores! They have the best prices and sometimes you can find some beautiful vintage ones.
ReplyDeleteI also have bought on etsy and ebay especially for rayon embroidery floss in beautiful solid and variegated colors.
ReplyDeleteA purchase from here is eminent :) --I predict it will be habit forming

(the truth is though, I prefer to pet my threads before bringing them home with me)
I live in Houston and every year in November we have a mega Quilt Festival and vendors from every thread company are on site with their displays selling their goods. I usually shop around and just buy a few colors from all of them!
