Where am I?

My friend Jackie was visiting last week, and we took in NYC in a big way.   From the West Village to Eataly, to the Met, to Washington Square Park, to the Brooklyn Bridge, to the new Caroussel in Brooklyn, the Promenade, Prospect Park, Coney Island.  Whew!  It was a busy week, and I was glad to have an unlimited subway card.

My favorite outing was the trip we took to the Cloisters.  Have you been there?  This annex of the Met is an amazing escape from the city.  After sitting on the subway for an hour and half, we walked out into Fort Tryon Park, and I felt like we were walking out into the Tuscan countryside.
Steep hills, amazing views of the Hudson, dramatic arches and pathways all made me feel like I had completely escaped Manhattan.  But there we were, in New York City.   A woman hurriedly scraping all the coins out of an ancient fountain brought me back to reality, and back to the Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler

  1. I love the Cloisters. Thanks for the pictures! It's been years since I went there. I have the spooky feeling when there that I was a monk or a nun in a previous life, possibly a scribe who illustrated manuscripts.

They used to have a garden day in early June, when there would be talks about medieval plants and gardening practices, and about plants in the tapestries, etc. Don't know if they still have that, but it's really worth going to.

I re-read The Mixed Up Files this summer. It's such a great book! I love it just as much now as I did so many years ago. Books like that, and also The Cricket in Times Square, made me want to live in New York when I was a kid.

  2. The gardening workshops sound amazing, Bonnie! I re-read the mixed up files this summer too, and enjoyed every word. I kept thinking of Claudia when I was at the Met on Tuesday. What an adventure....
