While driving through Pigeon Forge, and downton Gatlinburg last Saturday, I started to wonder what I had signed up for. The taxi-van passed a life sized version of the Titanic, an upside down re-creation of the White House, and endless Salt Water Taffy vendors. Just when I thought I'd seen it all, there was a sign for a two headed calf and a shark tank at Ripley's Believe it or Not. I thought Niagara Falls was bad, but this was worse. But then, literally across the street from the Aquarium full of sharks, the taxi-van turned and drove up a short ways into an escape from all that, to Arrowmont School of Crafts.
Only a short distance from the strip, it feels miles away from everything. I had a great time getting to know my 14 students and fellow teachers. It's amazing what a week in the Smoky Mountains can do.
